The act of portraiture photography is not merely the recording of a subject’s appearance, it is an opportunity to capture a moment in their life that would otherwise be lost to history. It is a collaborative act between the sitter and photographer and is left with the mark of both. This is for me the most integral part of the portraiture process, the interaction that occurs between the person behind the camera and the one in front of it.

Photographing those important to me is how I got started in portrait photography. As such, it is important to me that a portrait speaks truth of the subject. I take this approach with me into my professional work, tailoring each project to the subject. This could be through the choice of lens changing how the viewer interacts with the subject, or the lighting that highlights different aspects of the subject. The tailoring of the process leads to an enriching experience for both the subject and myself. Portraiture is a collaboration between subject and photographer and this collaborative process can be immensley beneficial for both parties. Both subject and photographer grow through the process.
